Open-box, returned, outlet, and refurbished
Condition labels describe a product's path, but they are not interchangeable quality grades. The seller's written definition and the return terms matter more than the label alone.
Ask what happened before resale
Open-box can mean a broken seal, a display item, or a customer return. Refurbished may involve testing, cleaning, repair, and repackaging by different parties. Request the seller's exact definition, the inspection performed, and whether all accessories are present.
Inspect by category
For electronics, check ports, battery behavior, serial numbers, and reset status. For apparel, inspect seams, odor, tags, and wear. For fragrance and beauty, verify seals, leakage, storage damage, and hygiene-return restrictions. Photograph the package before opening when condition matters.
Protect the return window
Test the primary functions early. Keep packaging and labels until the product has passed inspection. Record the delivery date, return deadline, restocking terms, and who pays return shipping.
